Spectrum Content Design – “WiFi Installation Guide”

Layout for a quad-fold instruction booklet for a Spectrum WiFi router and modem. It's been marked up with copy changes in red, comments and visual suggestions in orange.
Whenever I’m marking up a draft, I always try to provide clear, detailed guidance and explain my reasoning for substantive changes.

Here’s an example of my content design process for Spectrum’s self-install kits. I collaborated with the Industrial Design team, product owners and visual designers to provide technical copy and design recommendations for many printed instruction booklets like this one.

My copy changes were based on clarity, grammar and use of the Spectrum brand voice and style guide. I was constantly thinking about the interplay between text and visuals, and suggesting ways they could work together to help a person receiving each kit to digest the information. I also had to consider the overall customer journey in an ecosystem where people would often move from printed instructions to an app or website to finish setting up their equipment.

Content Design Case Study: Spectrum News App – Voter Guide

A new “Politics Hub” app section was nearing release

The original "Your Politics Hub" landing screen, with buttons leading to subsections for Elections, Explore Your Government and Politics News.

In 2021 I was a UX Writer at Charter Communications, best known for its Spectrum internet, TV, mobile and news brands. As one of my first assignments, I joined a project to add a new section of politics and elections info to the Spectrum News mobile app.

The new section was initially conceived as a “Politics Hub”, combining pre- and post-election info, details about elected representatives and politics news – all tailored to the user’s local municipality.

Designs were already mature, but the team was in the midst of reducing project scope and adapting to development constraints for first release ahead of the 2021 local elections.

Current designs were still using the placeholder “Politics Hub” name. I was asked to finalize a name for the section and review several entry points and introductory screens. Most of the remaining content was filled in by a 3rd-party API (CivicEngine).

Avanoo UX Writing – “StoryWizard”

I conceived of, designed, and wrote the UX copy for this “StoryWizard” form, which helped Avanoo collect hundreds (perhaps thousands) of meaningful true stories from employees throughout our client organizations. Form submissions were used to evaluate which stories would meet each organization’s strategic needs and translate most compellingly to video, and served as a blueprint to streamline the interviewing & editing process on the way to a final video.
